Rt Rev. Gerard P. Cusack O Praem. B.A., H.D.
There was widespread shock and sorrow at the news of the sudden death of Fr Gerard [P.J] Cusack which occurred at Beaument Hospital on Monday last. Born on January 18th 1942 he attended Lisboduff N.S. and St Patricks College, Cavan. He received the wite habit in September 1963 and was ordained on December 21st 1968. He taught in St Norberts College, Kilnacrott and later in St Norberts College, Queenspark, Western Australia. He was Subprior in Queenspark, Western Australia. He ministered in St Lukes parish, Kilmorewest, Dublin from 1983 to 1994. He was appointed Administrator at Holy Trinity Abbey, Kilnacrott on October27th 1994.He was appointed Prior de Regime at Kilnacrott Abbey in 1996 and carried out that role until his untimely death. A much travelled man Fr Gerards heart was always in Bunnoe where he was a great supporter of the many organisations in the community and he returned to concelebrate at many funerals in St Marys Church, Bunnoe. He was particularly proud of Bunnoe Brass Band and one of his many highlights was in 2003 when he accompanied them to take part in the St Patricks Day parade in New York. It was a fitting tribute when the band recited a number of hymns as his remains were carried to his final resting place in Bunnoe cemetery on Saturday last. Fr Gerard was an integral part of a schools reunion committee formed to mark the celebration of Lisarney ,Magherintemple and Lisboduff Nationals Scools in 2003, a memorable occasion when past pupils of the three schools from various parts of the world descended on Bunnoe for the August Bank holiday weekend. He was the editor of the excellent book ‘Bunnoe its schools and its people’ which was launched that weekend with so many photos and stories which evoked many memories for everyone. He was a member of the pioneers for over fifty years and the Kilmore Diocesan P.T.A.A. members held a guard of honour as his remains arrived at Kilnacrott Abbey on Thursday evening last. Fr Gerard also followed the fortunes of the local Drung football club and was an honorary president of the club for many years. The club formed a guard of honour as his remains arrived at Bunnoe cemetary on Saturday evening last. One of his last functions in the local community was on Monday March 4th when he was invited to Lisboduff N.S. to launch a book entitled ‘We are writers’, a compilation of short stories written by present and past pupils and he himself wrote an article in this book. The large crowds who attended Kilnacrott Abbey where his remains reposed on Thursday evening and Friday last was a testimony to the esteem in which Fr Gerard was held. There was a very large congretation at his funeral Mass in The Abbey Church, Kilnacrott on Saturday morning and also at Bunnoe cemetery where he was laid to rest afterwards. Predeceased by his brother Brian [Australia], he is survived by his brothers, Eddie [Bunnoe], Noel [Dublin], sisters Marie Crossan [Cavan], Margaret Hennessy[Cashel] and Philomena McCabe[Cootehill], brothers in law, sisters in law, nephews, nieces, grandnephews ,grandnieces, relatives , many friends and the Norbertine community to whom sympathy is extended. Ar dheis De go raibh a anam dilis.
